I am a friendly, passionate, and professional tutor and college counselor, with ten years of experience and a PhD in English and Writing. I meet each student where he or she is, helping students gain admission to their top-choice schools.
The college application process can seem baffling and exhausting, but it doesn’t need to be that way. I help students and parents navigate the process – everything from initial brainstorming to application checklists, standardized test prep, essay and personal statement help, and college visits. With a sensitivity toward their passions and talents, I help students find colleges and universities that will be the best match for them. I have worked with students who have been admitted to Cambridge, Yale, Notre Dame, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, UC-Berkeley, Duke, Vanderbilt, Michigan, and other top schools. I also work with academically struggling students to attain the grades, skills and scores they need to make a strong application.
While many factors contribute to an excellent application, standardized test scores are still the most important. I scored a 1530 (out of 1600) on the SAT, which included a perfect English score of 800, which helped me gain admission to Notre Dame’s Honors Program. Through diagnostic testing, I help students shore up weaknesses while teaching tips and tricks that can help increase any student’s score.
GRE/GMAT Tutoring and Graduate School Application Coaching
As I learned as a Notre Dame undergraduate, the graduate school application process can be at least as byzantine as the undergraduate application process. My years of writing experience give me a unique ability to help students polish their personal statements, statements of purpose, and writing samples, and I work with students to tailor those statements to best suit the particular programs to which they’re applying. Standardized test scores are also crucial for many programs, and I work with students to master the relevant test.
International students have particular challenges and advantages when it comes to the application process, and I’ve worked with students from Dubai, Mexico, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, China, Tahiti, and other countries. I help international students draw on their particular experiences to showcase their unique perspectives and abilities.
Michael was enormously helpful to me as I applied to Graduate Programs in religious studies. He dramatically strengthened all five of my applications, and I was accepted to all five programs, including programs at Duke, UChicago, and Yale.
Equal parts brilliant English teacher, knowledgable college counselor, and experienced guide, I know that none of my applications would have been half as successful without his time and effort.
His expertise and mastery of English would be sufficient on their own to recommend him, but even more striking is his generosity and kindness. He truly cared about my successes.I heartily recommend Michael to anyone looking for help as they apply to graduate school, as he will provide invaluable help in strengthening every part of one’s application.
-Colin, University of Notre Dame
“Michael tutored me on a weekly basis through my junior and senior year of high school. Michael was enjoyable to work with, an excellent communicator, flexible with his schedule and was very knowledgeable about every topic we covered. Under Michael’s tutelage, I was able to write strong college entrance essays and significantly boost my SAT scores, from 1340 to 1450.”
-Alex, local high school student
I worked with Michael in preparation for my GMAT and he was a wonderful tutor. Attentive and patient, Michael was able to explain things in the detail that I needed, while pushing me to challenge myself. While we focused primarily on the math sections of the material, Michael was very knowledgable on all subjects of the test.
-Kathleen, University of Notre Dame
I had the pleasure of working with Michael to prepare a number of university applications.
When I first talked with Michael he knew to ask the right questions in order to understand me and my background, while recognizing what might be important and relevant to write in the application essays. Above all I felt comfortable talking with him and sharing my life experiences.
During the preparation process, Michael was quick in responding and knew how to extract the essence of what I wrote, keeping it mine but rephrasing it and making the essay to flow naturally.
I have no doubt that Michael’s help had a huge impact on my application responses; I was admitted to a Master’s program at UC Berkeley and NYU.

I used Michael’s assistance for my PhD applications (I applied to both US and UK universities). Michael helped me to write my statement of purpose and my CV with great attentiveness and intelligence. We talked a few times, so he would get a clear message of what I planned to for my PhD and in order to understand my academic and personal background and knew exactly what I should highlight in order to make myself the best competitive candidate. In September 2016 I will be starting my PhD in Sociology at Manchester University, with a full scholarship. I am sure Michael played an important part in making my dream to study abroad, at a high-ranked university, come true.
